All too often, termite activity goes undetected. It is usually only after extensive damage is done to a home that things are noticed. It is after termites have eaten away at the very structure of your home and things are starting to stress and strain. Cracks might appear in plaster, skirting’s might crack or warp. Floor boards tend to “pucker up” or you might notice that you can see into the wood through the veneer. It could be in your kitchen, hallway, living areas or your bathroom-anywhere.
Termites can attack most structures unimpeded and unseen. They are a little like bees in their behavior. The termite colony is led by the Queen, she is back at home-possibly 100 meters away, possibly more. The workers escorted by some soldiers use established and even build new tunnels underground right under your home. They enter via 101 different possible pathways- through mortar between bricks, beside pipes, poorly made shower or bath bases that are in concrete slab homes. Or via stumps, pipes etc in suspended floor homes. The workers walk in, grab a load of cellulose [timber] and turn around and walk straight back to the colony with the precious food. The average termite can eat about one matchstick per month, multiplied by 1.5 to 2 million termites in the colony-this can add up to something pretty bad.
